Movies about heroin addiction

Recommended Posts

Don't know if this has come up but I'm curious as to what movies about addiction you guys have seen and when you watch them.  I just finished watching Permanent Midnight again, the story about Jerry Stahl, writer and heroin addict.  I also watched Trainspotting.  I've just been watching these videos because I am working on a memoir and these videos are like 12-step for me.  They also provide insight.  Sometimes I jones a bit, I admit, when I watch them, other times it's like, "damnit, you know, if I had paid attention to that part of the flick then THAT wouldn't have happened in my hell!"  What other movies have you seen/do you watch when you're clean or when you're not clean?  I remember watching Basketball Diaries before I ever got into heroin.  I might watch that one tonight.

Some movies about dope I used to watch when I was on MMT to stay clean, that is, get some perspective. Also, I used to watch them in my early addiction days with my friends and we'd all get loaded but times have changed.  Yea it sucks growing up :) but the grass is always greener, ya know what I mean?

There's meant to be a Train spotting 2 film due out soon or some time this year. Look good from the previews. It has all the same cast

Requiem for a dream is really good. I think Ellyn Burstyn won the academy award for her performance in it.

Yeah hopefully it is good. There's meant to be a book.  Not read it though.  Its one of my favorites aswell. Begbie makes me laugh when he chucks the pint glass over his shoulder and says something which is good with the his Scottish accent.

When I first saw the film Begbie was somewhat of a hero to me.  He just seemed so badass.  Of course I was still very young.  When I got clean and went on MMT I decided to buy the book.  I read it several times, it is absolutely wonderful.  Then I saw the story for what it really was - heroin can bring good times, almost anything can bring good times, but the good times - they never last for a junkie.  Or for anyone, really, and maybe that's why he came up with that tagline about life.  Life is not that great in the first place so those upright clean citizens buy into marriage, work, and television programs that crush the soul because that it is all they can afford, spiritually.

I heard that the writer, Irvine Welsh, quit heroin but moved on to other drugs.  Am curious about the sequel.

Yeh a CLASSIC part of the film as it shows how much of a phyco Begbie is!.

As he stands on the upper floor of a boozer and casualy tosses an old style dimpled pint glass over the balcony which hits a poor girl!.Then shouts which Bstrd glassed this poor lassie and bounds down the stairs punching and kicking any unfortunate soul in his way # absolutely class!!!.

It's not so much the violence. It's more the accent, maybe it because i'm not Scottish and the accent can sound good with certain words and the tone.

I enjoyed the sequel, a good adaptation of "Porno", on which it's loosely based. Incidentally, I've drank in that boozer that scene was filmed in many times, it's in Glasgow, where most of the original was filmed. Great book too, I've got all Irvine Welsh's work.

It's not a heroin movie per se, but Clean and Sober is a really great film, 1988, some of it seems a bit dated, but it stills shines.  Michael Keaton, Morgan Freeman, some great actors.  Mostly about rehab and the reasons why people come and go to those places.  Watching it right now.
